- The living environment regents examination is offered to students in New York State in January, June, and August.
- The total test raw score is converted to a scaled score using a conversion chart – that is specific each exam.
- The June 2014 Conversion sheet is shown below, scoring 41/85 (48%) scales to 65/100 (65%), while 66/85 (78%) scales to 85/100 (85%).

The exam is divided into 5 sections – total 85 points (raw score).
- Section A – multiple-choice – 30 points (raw score)
- Section B-1 – multiple-choice – 12 points (raw score)
- Section B-2 – multiple-choice and free-response – 13 points (raw score)
- Section C – free-response – 17 points (raw score)
- Section D – multiple-choice and free-response – 13 points (raw score).
- Section B-2 generally contains a graph.
- Section C often contains several multi-step questions.
- Section D focuses on laboratory skills and procedures – mainly on the four (4) state labs, as well as general lab safety.
